H Test and 8 Test Tips: How to Pass Kerala's Driving Ground Test First Time
Published 2026-10-04 · Maria MDS, Kattanam
The ground test is where most nervous learners lose marks, not because it's hard, but because nerves make you rush. The 'H' (for cars) and '8' (for two-wheelers) are slow-speed control tests. Pass them by staying slow, steady and predictable.
The 'H' test (car)
In the 'H' test, you drive the car through an H-shaped layout marked with poles, then reverse back through it. You have to do it without touching any pole, crossing the lines, or stalling. It tests clutch control, steering judgement and your use of mirrors.
Tips that work:
- 1Crawl on the clutch. Keep the car at walking pace using the clutch's biting point, not the accelerator. Speed is the number one reason learners hit poles.
- 2Learn your mirror reference points. Your instructor will show you where a pole should appear in the side mirror before you start turning. Practise until you can do it without thinking.
- 3Steer early and fully, then straighten. Half-turns cause the car to drift into poles.
- 4Don't lean out or open the door. Use mirrors only, unless the examiner says otherwise. Note that the MVD announced in June 2026 that reverse cameras will be allowed; check if that's in force on your test day.
- 5If you're unsure, stop. A smooth pause is safer than a wrong correction. Don't let the car roll.
The '8' test (two-wheeler)
You ride a figure 8 between marked lines without putting a foot down or touching the markers. It tests balance and low-speed control.
- 1Look where you want to go, not at the ground. Your bike follows your eyes.
- 2Keep a little throttle and drag the rear brake lightly. This steadies the bike at low speed far better than going slow on throttle alone.
- 3Use the clutch friction zone on a geared bike. Ride the biting point instead of snatching gears.
- 4Keep your body upright and let the bike lean under you for tight turns.
- 5Practise both directions. Most learners are weaker turning one way.
Most common reasons people fail
| Mistake | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Touching a pole or marker | Slow down; use reference points |
| Stalling the car | Find the biting point before releasing the brake |
| Foot down on the '8' | Eyes up, light rear brake, steady throttle |
| Forgetting the seatbelt or mirrors | Run a pre-start routine every lesson |
| Rushing because of nerves | Practise on a layout that matches the test |
A 7-day practice plan before your test
- Days 1–2: Clutch control and slow driving or riding on open ground
- Days 3–4: Full 'H' or '8' runs on a marked layout, 10+ times each day
- Day 5: Timed runs with the instructor acting as examiner
- Day 6: Road practice: junctions, indicators, mirrors (for the road test)
- Day 7: Light revision only, then rest
